The defence of human rights: a responsibility for all

The Declaration is mainly addressed to human rights defenders and States but it explains that everyone has duties towards and within the community.

The Declaration encourages us to be human rights defenders and to protect and promote human rights to the scale and the extent of our means.

In that way, the Declaration outlines responsibilities for everyone to promote human rights, to safeguard democracy and its institutions and to not violate the human rights of others.

More precisely, the Declaration makes a special reference to the responsibilities of persons exercising professions that can affect the human rights of others.

It is especially relevant for police officers, lawyers, judges, etc.
